How to Cut Down On Food Waste

Everyone is aware that wasting food is a terrible thing. At the same time, it can be quite difficult to prevent it. This is because it is normal to unconsciously throw away or waste a lot more than you need to. Fortunately, you don’t have to continue with this pattern. If you want to minimise just how much you toss on a daily basis, you have come to the right place. Here, you will find tips and tricks to make sure that you save a lot more than you did before. Let’s get started…

Don’t Buy Any More Than You Need

Admittedly, this is a tough one although it can be argued that it is one of the more important points. When you buy more food than strictly necessary, you will find yourself throwing it out in the near future when it spoils. This is why when shopping for perishable items such as fruit, vegetable, and meat, be honest about how much you are actually going to need for the next few days. True, you may have to make more trips to the grocery store but at the very least, you will not continue to be wasteful.

Store Your Food Properly

Clearly, one of the main reasons that you toss food into the garbage is because it has gone bad. Well, this can easily be avoided if you know how to store your produce properly. By taking the necessary precautions, you can expand the lifespan of fruits and veggies considerably. This means placing the various foods in the right places – either in the fridge or on the countertop. You will need to make sure that the foods are continued to be kept in places with optimal temperatures. You should also be aware of which fruits and veggies simply shouldn’t be mixed.

Actually Make Use of Leftovers

At one point or another, you are bound to be plagued by leftovers. It is important, however, that you eat this excess food in a timely manner. This means actually keeping the leftovers in the front of the fridge so that you notice it whenever you open the door. Since leftovers can be quite boring to eat, think of a way to repurpose them. So, take last night’s dinner and turn it into something entirely new. This way, everyone will be a lot more excited about having to eat the same thing again.

Don’t Throw Scraps Away

The next time you think about throwing away the tips or peels of your veggies, think again. This is because they can be used to make fresh, delicious vegetable stock. Since you only want the liquid, you don’t have to be too fussy about what bits of the vegetables actually go in there. For vegetables and fruit that can’t be turned into stock, there is always composting. By storing these scraps, you can actually create nourishing fertiliser for the plants in your garden for free of charge!

As you can see, you don’t have to waste food if you don’t want to! With the simple methods mentioned above, you can cut down on your daily waste significantly.
